Definition

RDF is a W3C data model for representing information as subject-predicate-object triples.

Background

RDF 1.1 defines resources, IRIs, literals, graphs, and datasets as a foundation for linked data and Semantic Web representations.

Position

It is the representation layer beneath ontology and OWL-based knowledge modeling.

Distinctions

  • RDF is a data model; OWL adds a richer ontology language and reasoning layer.
  • RDF/XML is one serialization of RDF, not RDF itself.
